For some time I have been using official Drupal social media channels to champion individuals and communities in countries beyond USA and Europe. To recognise that Drupal is a truly global community, where all are welcome and do take part. Now I have some interesting and fascinating evidence that this is true, read on.
During DrupalCamp London I spoke with Vijayachandran Mani (vijaycs85) on this topic and how interesting it would be to see a visualisation of contributors to Drupal 8 based on country. I speculated that it might paint a rather unexpected picture.
Using Lauri Eskola's DrupalCores.com it is now possible to track people with core commit mentions by country. Following the groundswell in interest for my Drupal 8 tagcloud at DrupalCon Barcelona, I could not resist producing one by country and I think it reveals some unexpected statistics.
The top 10 countries are currently United States, India, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Australia, France, Ukraine. There are many countries teetering on the top 10 including Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, Denmark, Russian Federation so it's all to play for!
I plan to release one final tag cloud on the day that Drupal 8 is released, listing the top 1000 personal contributors. So there's never been a better time to get some more commits to core, get your name down on this historic document. If you want advice on how to start contributing to core visit the Core contribution mentoring area of Drupal.org
The cloud above is raw data, people with core commit mentions by country.
The above tag cloud illustrates people with core commit mentions by country per 1 million head of population. What this shows is some smaller countries have greater number of contributors when compared to their smaller population. Data provided by Dave Hall.
At DrupalCon I arranged for a 9 metre squared floor decal celebrating the top 1000 contributors to Drupal 8. So many of you asked for access to the original artwork, and many who could not be at the conference, so I have prepared this page so you can!
It was such a delight to witness so many Drupalists, with a great sense of pride, photographing theirs and friends names, sharing on social media. The larger a name is, the more they have contributed. But honestly if your name is there, bravo to you!
Below the tag cloud is clickable so you can reach each persons D.O account. There is also attached a PDF version so you can print it if you like.
I used DrupalCores.com for source data and Tagul.com to produce the artwork. I hope you enjoyed seeing it and look forward to seeing you at future Drupal events.
